For the seventeenth consecutive year, PortAventura Business & Events hosted the 57th RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada (Rally of Spain 2022), an edition that stood out for its environmental commitment to reduce its carbon footprint, and neutralise the environmental impact it creates. For the first time in the history of the rally, the motor racing event prioritised vehicles that use synthetic fuels and generate zero emissions, and, in tandem, other measures were applied to guarantee the sustainability of the competition, such as proper waste management and the calculation and compensation of CO2 emissions.
The organisation was overseen by the PortAventura Business & Events team, and as the nerve centre and operations centre of the competition, the Convention Centre also applied its own sustainable and responsible management model to minimise the environmental and energy impact of the event, facilitating the installation of a recycling point for special waste, and providing a car wash area in accordance with current regulations, among other measures.
In this way, the organisation is making progress in reducing the environmental impact of the event, which since 2017 has obtained sustainability certification awarded by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) with the highest level of excellence. In addition to this recognition, PortAventura Convention Centre also holds internationally prestigious environmental certifications such as the European EMAS certificate, the ISO14001 standard and the Distinctive Environmental Quality Guarantee.
The director of PortAventura Business & Events, Malin Nilsson, who took the opportunity to congratulate the winners on the podium of the championship, assured that “the 57th RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada (Rally of Spain 2022) is a very important milestone because for 17 years, its organisers have trusted in our potential and capacity to develop the championship with full guarantees. In addition, this edition has been developed under new basic working premises for us like innovation and sustainability, which has given us the opportunity to continue contributing to the care of the environment through the implementation of solutions that make us unique within our industry“.
From 20 to 23 October, the 111 teams taking part in this competition set up in the service park in the PortAventura World car park, with a surface area of more than 55,000m2, while the race base and press room were housed in the PortAventura Convention Centre. More than 300 journalists arrived to cover the event, broadcasting day-to-day events from the multifunctional Carthage Room and attending the press conferences held in the Harvard Room. The multi-purpose Damascus Room was transformed into race management headquarters, and the Premium Tarraco Room into those of the FIA organising committee.
PortAventura Convention Centre, which brought together 3,000 professionals from all over the world for this sporting event, not only played host to Race Management, but also facilitated the recording, editing and audiovisual production of the event, and provided catering areas for attendees and members of the organisation. Like in previous editions, and offering great logistical advantages due to its proximity, PortAventura World’s Hotel Caribe, just a 5-minute walk away from the convention centre, was the host hotel designated to accommodate the organisation, as well as some of the riders and the world championship team.
The French team formed by Sébastien Ogier – Benjamin Veillas (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 Hybrid) claimed outright victory in the 57th RallyRACC Catalunya-COSTA DAURADA, Rally of Spain 2022, penultimate round of the FIA World Championship held over the weekend in Salou, PortAventura World and the Costa Daurada. The victory of Ogier, 8-times World Champion, is the fourth of this 38-year-old French driver in the Spanish race.
